South Florida AFL-CIO Endorses Eileen Higgins for Miami Mayor

Higgins recognized for strong pro-worker leadership, record of delivering results for Miami’s working families

Miami, FL – Fresh off a commanding first-place finish in last week’s election — earning nearly twice the support of her closest opponent, and winning across all five Miami city commission districts — Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins has been endorsed by the members of the South Florida AFL-CIO. The organization, which represents thousands of workers in the City of Miami, praised Higgins’ record as a proven, results-driven leader who delivers for the people who keep Miami running.

“Through her record of service, Commissioner Eileen Higgins has proven time and again that she’s a true champion for Miami’s workers and families,” said South Florida AFL-CIO President Jeffery Mitchell. “From her years as County Commissioner to her campaign for Mayor, Eileen has consistently championed fair pay, safe working conditions, and respect for every worker. We know she will continue fighting to make Miami a city that works for everyone. We look forward to mobilizing our members in the coming weeks to secure her spot as the next Mayor of Miami and ensure that workers have a leader who shows up, listens, and gets results.”

As County Commissioner for District 5, Higgins has been a steadfast advocate for working families — helping to expand living-wage protections, add paid sick days for County security guards, and improve workplace safety at Miami International Airport. Her leadership helped expose unsafe conditions that led to a landmark national collective bargaining agreement improving the lives of airport workers. She has supported efforts to strengthen responsible-wage standards for construction projects, fought to block anti-living-wage legislation in Tallahassee, and invested in small business programs that have created jobs and expanded economic opportunity.

“I am deeply honored to once again receive the endorsement of the hardworking men and women of the South Florida AFL-CIO,” said Commissioner Eileen Higgins. “Working people are the backbone of our city — the teachers, bus drivers, sanitation workers, construction crews, and healthcare workers who make Miami run every single day. As Mayor, I will fight to make sure they have fair wages, safe workplaces, and a city government that treats them with the respect they deserve. Together, we will build a stronger, more affordable Miami that works for everyone.”

Higgins, who has represented much of the City of Miami on the County Commission since 2018, has earned a reputation for ethical, transparent leadership and a results-driven approach. She has built and preserved thousands of affordable housing units, secured nearly half a billion dollars in federal transit funding, led environmental reforms to protect Biscayne Bay, and invested millions to strengthen small businesses. Her campaign for Mayor focuses on restoring trust in government, expanding affordability, supporting small businesses, and ensuring safe, thriving neighborhoods across the city.

As the leading candidate in the campaign for Miami Mayor, Commissioner Higgins’ track record of results continues to earn her support from a strong coalition of community and labor organizations, local leaders, and respected local news sources — including the Miami Herald Editorial Board, the Miami Times Editorial Board, members of 1199SEIU, SEIU 32BJ, LiUNA Local 1652, UNITE HERE Local 355, EMILY’s List, Ruth’s List Florida, Equality Florida Action PAC, and SAVE Action PAC, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, County Commissioners Oliver Gilbert and Danielle Cohen Higgins, Senator Shevrin Jones, Representative Ashley Gantt, former Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, South Miami Mayor Javier Fernandez, and more.

The runoff race is on December 9.
